Fela Kuti once stated that “without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat”, and the influence of this drumming pioneer on the rhythmic phenomenon of the Afrobeat genre is indisputable. Tony will be reuniting with 3 other members of Fela Kuti’s Legendary Afrika 70 band for this one-off show. They will get to the roots of Afrobeat, bringing his fiery rhythms and unstoppable groove to the stage.
As if this wasn’t enough, Nubiyan Twist will also be taking to the stage, with their unique approach to blending jazz, hip-hop, afrobeat, latin, soul & reggae. Their latest album Jungle Run, released on the legendary Strut Records and featuring heavy-weights Mulatu Astatke and Tony Allen himself, received great critical acclaim. They’ll be accompanied on stage by Mercury-Prize nominated vocalist Cherise Adams-Burnett.
The night will continue on until 4am with Awalé, Global Roots, Lexus Blondin, Alex Rita & Errol all taking a turn on the decks to keep the dancefloor moving with raucous beats and high-tempo grooves.
