2 of Ireland’s most talented artistic forces join forces for an incredibly intimate show at Sebright Arms.

Uniting two of Ireland’s most forward-thinking musical propositions – Eoin O’Callaghan AKA Elma Orkestra and Ryan Vail – ‘Borders’ is a singular collaborative project. Spanning symphonic ambience to widescreen electronica, it’s a genre-warping meeting of the minds from two of the country's most innovative artists.

Having both been releasing music independently of one another since 2012, the album is a project that has almost felt destined to happen. As two artists residing on either sides of the border in Derry/Londonderry, their paths have entwined several times in the past.

Now, mirroring the spirit of the times – of grasping for unity and togetherness in
an unpredictable, ultimately borderless world – ‘Borders’ is a release that sees those creative paths meet head-on. Across eight tracks, from opener ‘Droves’ to the beat-laden outro ‘Arlene’, O’Callaghan and Vail masterfully blur the contours between contemporary electronic and classical realms. This breaking of new ground – of pushing boundaries and thwarting expectations via attention to detail and a joint penchant for analogue equipment – is what underpins ‘Borders’.

After a three year absence from the capital, French hip-hop collective Chinese Man return for a rare London show at the iconic O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire.

Chinese Man are well known for picking influences from the most abstract of places to make their sound all the more exciting. Over predominantly dubby beats, the collective embroider African, Asian and Latin influences with precise scratching and a mass of obscure samples. There’s no corner of the globe and no sound they haven’t conquered.

The group became widely known through the song “I’ve Got That Tune” which was chosen by Mercedes-Benz for its promotional campaign. Since then they have released 11 outstanding albums and have continued to push the boundaries of hip-hop by doing what no one else dares. Mixing cinematic themes with samples from the likes of Easy Rider and the Holy Mountain, while throwing in vocals from a whole host of guest artists including Scratch Bandits Crew, Fela Kuti, and Plex Rock, Chinese Man are always at the top of their game.

Support for the night comes from the groundbreaking talent that is South African rapper Yugen Blakrok. Growing up in the Eastern Cape and influenced by the political/militant and spiritual aspects of Hip-Hop, her music is firmly rooted in the mind-set of the 90’s, a deep lyrical and audio odyssey into the world around us, both seen and unseen.

Hip-Hop heads, don’t miss out on this night of unrivaled talent. This one’s going to be big.

The most innovative rap crew the world has seen

In the early 90’s, when gangsta’ rap consumed the airwaves, and the majority of West Coast rappers strapped on their Locs, Chuck Taylor’s & Ben Davis’, The Pharcyde decidedly maintained a willfully weird vision. Opting to stay true to themselves with their left field but still South-Central sensibility, rap had seen few groups so self-deprecating and so smart, four visionary rappers adroitly able to split the difference between helium-voiced and hard-core.

Listening to “Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde” two full decades after its release, its sense of timeliness is unmistakable. Every song on the album inverts a hoary hip-hop cliché. With classics like “Oh Shit,” “Otha Fish”, “Ya’ Mama,” and hit single, “Passing Me By,” it is not surprising that it shipped over a million units, garnered comparisons to De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest, and everyone from Pitchfork Media to The Source has hailed it as one of the greatest albums ever made.

Speaking on the passage of time, their second release “LabCabInCalifornia” has revealed exactly how far-reaching The Pharcyde’s vision was. From enlisting a young and then unknown James Yancey aka J DILLA to produce beats on the classic “Runnin”, to collaborating with director Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich” “Adaptation”) on the video for “Drop,” it has consistently reinforced their steadfast refusal to tread familiar artistic grounds.

Today, The Pharcyde continue to hone their individual abilities while still carrying on the name & legacy in its original fashion. At Earth, expect them to seduce their audience with the same boyish charm that founded them at the beginning. Joined by Jungle Brother’s Africa Baby Bam who’ll be spinning old school hip hop tunes, this is simply an unmissable show for true hip hop fans.

When it comes to Hip Hop, no one is as consistent and influential as KRS-One. It is impossible to discuss Hip Hop’s history without discussing KRS-One. His reputation as both a live performer and as Hip Hop’s resident “Teacha” has reached mythic proportions. At Electric Brixton, KRS-One will work through the hip hop masterpieces he’s created throughout his life – from songs that changed the very fabric of hip hop (Poetry, Rappaz R N Dainja, Outta Here) to tunes that have become a part of hip hop history (Sound of da Police, The MC).

Joining him is an unreal line up of Ty and Blak Twang. Ty,British rapper signed to Big Dada, is best known for his lyrical frankness and honest portrayals of everyday life, making him part of the fast-growing movement of British socially conscious rappers. Blak Twang, famed for his charismatic live performances, is another pioneering British rapper who has fast gained a massive South London fanbase.

Ulrich Schnauss https://soundcrashmusic.com/ulrich-schnauss-5-elct-jzz/ Fri, 17 May 2019 18:00:08 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=36439 We’ll be sending out a brand new and exclusive Ulrich Schnauss track to all those who have bought their tickets by 12 PM Friday!

Ulrich Schnauss presents ‘Now is a Timeless Present’, a career-spanning retrospective encompassing key works from the past two decades. The German electronic composer will be selecting fundamental music from his back catalogue.

At once uplifting and otherworldly, the music of Ulrich Schnauss utilizes multi-layered synthesizers to map out an aural escape route from the trappings of a reality limiting our imagination. Born in Kiel in 1977, Schnauss developed a love of electronic music from a young age. He explains, ‘I’ve always used making and listening to music as a way to escape – putting on headphones is a way to leave reality behind for a while, reminding oneself of the ‘possibility of the possible’ – regardless of how hopeless or dystopian the current state of things may appear to be.’ Inspired by the alternative guitar bands of the late 80s and early 90s as well as Acid House and early electronica, Schnauss began developing his own distinct sonic palette. Melding delicate dream-pop sensibilities with ecstatic electronic excess and defying the constraints of music genre boundaries.

After a move to Berlin in the late 90s, Schnauss felt confident enough to begin releasing  ‘little electronica pieces’ under his own name – 2001s ‘Far Away Trains Passing By’. Four further studio albums have followed since then: ‘A Strangely Isolated Place’ (2003), ‘Goodbye’ (2007), ‘A Long Way to Fall’ (2013) and ‘No Further Ahead Than Today’ (2016). In addition, Schnauss has continuously produced and released music under various pseudonyms and in collaboration with other artists. He’s a prolific remixer and a member of the last Tangerine Dream Line Up picked by the late Edgar Froese.

After an initial struggle to perform the unique, interchanging nuances of his compositions live, the arrival of Ableton’s Live software has enabled him to build new arrangements on the spot, lending diversity and distinction to each performance. ‘I can react to the atmosphere of the room or re-interpret the pieces in a way that’s reflecting my mood,’ he explains, ‘sometimes playing more ambient; sometimes more rhythm-orientated versions of the songs.’ In addition, portable solutions such as Sonic Core’s SCOPE/XITE (a digital modular system essentially) have more recently inspired him to add improvisatory, free-form parts.

Joining Ulrich Schnauss on stage is his long-term collaborator, London-based visual artist Nat Urazmetova. In her live visuals the organic and synthesised, amorphous and elusive, fluid and uncanny coalesce, mutate and continuously evolve in the free-flow of improvisation. Through shifting the accustomed modes of perception, the visual performance threads the different narratives of seeing, sensing and relating to the sonic counterpart.

Ulrich Schnauss will release “Now Is A Timeless Present” a 7 CD Box Set on his label Scripted Realities Friday 8th March 2019. Containing all of Ulrich’s albums to date plus an album of unreleased material. The 65 tracks have all been remastered.

“Far Away Trains Passing By” contains a further expanded version of the second disc that was part of the album’s American release.  “A Long Way To Fall” having been remixed and partially re-recorded.

Available as a limited CD Box set, digitally and with vinyl editions to follow in May 2019.

After releasing new critically acclaimed album Cohesion on Tru Thoughts last year that drew a lot of positive attention from BBC 6 Music, Anchorsong returns to London for a live show with dull string quartet. Expect colourful, mildly psychedelic and incredibly danceable rhythms that, when paired with a string quartet, will leave your head spinning.

Support for this very special night of cutting edge electronica come from both Kiki Hitomi and Cornelia. Kiki Hitomi has primarily made a name for herself as a singer/songwriter for Ninja Tune’s Midas Sound. Her solo material has also released positive reviews from FACT Mag and draws upon both Japanese electronica and reggae influences. Cornelia, who’s collaborated with the likes of Bonobo and Portico Quartet, is known for her unique breathy vocals and skittering electronic beats.

Featuring the best of the best in up and coming electronica, this night at Scala is unmissable.

LAPP https://soundcrashmusic.com/lapp/ Thu, 25 Apr 2019 18:00:29 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=41028

Alt-R&B singer-songwriter LAPP progresses towards his debut EP

His fiery singing and calculated production make “Tennessee” a poignant track with an intense emotional impact

(EARMILK)

‘What a great f*cking artist

(Tom Robinson BBC 6 Music)

After gaining some serious acclaim from Earmilk, Tom Robinson, Louder Than War on his debut single Tennessee, LAPP now deviates in style, moving further towards a classification in the realms of alt-R&B. Still featuring emotive yowls and telling tales of the human condition, LAPP now pulls his style of song-writing toward a strong focus on distinctively digitised terrains of instrumentation, producing something entirely new.

LAPP’s latest sonic venture, ‘Sunny’, thrives on a relaxed groove that stays constant throughout, leaving plenty of space for his gritty vocals to soulfully meander as he cries out questions of life and love. The use of live saxophone brings a rich and organic element to the track, perfectly complimenting the electronically distorted vocal sample that introduces the track and returns periodically to add extra production punch.

TERAKAFT https://soundcrashmusic.com/terakaft-3-wrl/ Wed, 24 Apr 2019 18:00:40 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=38086 Feel the heat of Terakaft as they bring sun-scorched guitars and desert blues to East London.

Founded by former members of the desert-rock pioneers Tinariwen, Terakaft send listeners deep into the heart of the desert, perfectly reflecting Saharan sands with their rolling and evocative grooves. Formed in 2001, the group have since made the electric guitar completely their own. The stark and harsh conditions of their homeland powerfully permeates through their wild riffs, massed chants and soaring vocals.

Comprised of three members, all of whom sing and play guitar, the group is a perfect fusion of two rhythm guitarists; one bringing sweet and meticulously crafted melodies, while the other holds down an effortlessly rhythmic beat. Underlying all this is the heavy but purposeful tred of the the bass. With the notes of the lead guitar meandering us through a musical wasteland, and the heavy and pulsating heartbeat of the percussion (said to be like that of the “delicate but strong steps of a camel”)…. the group are an intrinsic embodiment of the wild and free terrain of their homeland.

Over the powerful composition of their music they have weaved stories of exile and loneliness in their mother tongue of “Tamashek”. Being born out of the crucible of the northern Mali’s 1980s and 90s rebels, the bands lyrics have been refined by the recent troubles of their homeland.

Guaranteed to heat up the Oslo, Hackney stage, this will be an unmissable opportunity to watch the Saharan bluesmen that are Terakaft live in London!

“With its rock-style production, heavy, looping percussion and melodic guitar lines, Terakaft is poised to find a large audience.” –The Green Man Review

Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad https://soundcrashmusic.com/adrian-younge-ali-hph-jzz/ Wed, 24 Apr 2019 18:00:06 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=41747 Two of hip hop’s most accomplished producers bring their new highly acclaimed live project, featuring a 9-piece brass and string section, to the UK for the first time.

When two of hip-hop’s most accomplished composers & producers join forces on a new project you know the results are going to be special.

Ali Shaheed Muhammad (founding member of A Tribe Called Quest and super producer in his own right) & Adrian Younge (Black Dynamite, Jay-Z, Ghostface Killah, Wu Tang Clan, Talib Kweli etc)  began their work together in 2013 on the critically acclaimed Souls of Mischief There Is Only Now and Kendrick Lamar’s untitled unmastered albums.  Their partnership cemented on their celebrated music score work for Marvel’s Luke Cage.

Inspired by the sonic aesthetic of Luke Cage their creative dynamic was crystalised in a brand new project ‘The Midnight Hour’, which was released to rapturous acclaim in 2018.

The Midnight Hour is black excellence: an ode to the cultural sophistication of the Harlem Renaissance that occured in New York in the 1920s.  The Midnight Hour album is not just Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge, it’s two of hip-hop’s greatest producers with a tight rhythm section and a full orchestra as well as some of the most celebrated names in contemporary hip-hop, R&B, soul & jazz including CeeLo Green, Raphael Saadiq, Marsha Ambrosius, Bilal, Eryn Allen Kane, Karolina, Questlove and more.

They take this snapshot of this chapter of Black American culture on the road this Spring performing the acclaimed album with full live band, string and brass section. It’s quite simply one of the most unmissable tours of 2019. Don’t sleep.

Debuting all new material, this show is set to be in incredibly high demand.

Having written and sung Steal and Midas from Maribou State’s debut album (attracting 6 Music A list plus Lauren Laverne and Maida Vale live sessions); as well as latest single Nervous Tics from their second LP Kingdoms In Colour, on which NME said she ‘shines’, Walker has been writing and touring live with the group for the last few years. Appearances with the band include Glastonbury, Bestival, Secret Garden Party, Sonar, Koko and their forthcoming sold-out show at London’s Roundhouse.

Meanwhile, Walker has been quietly amassing solo material – a groove-led collection of songs detailing ‘casual romance for the bored and selfish’, ‘internet rage’, or ‘that wet-yourself sensation that time’s running out and you haven’t won the game yet’. A ‘wry, light-footed’ lyricist (The Times) with ‘sultry and intoxicating’ vocals (The Guardian), she found her angle when she introduced a live rhythm section to the electronic productions she’d been working on with collaborators including North Downs (Dama Dama) and Royce Wood Junior (37 Adventures). The result is timely and perfectly distilled pop.

A soulful London artist, and a fast rising star, this is unmissable.

Soul-soaked Afrobeat and Hip Hop collective Nubiyan Twist launch their highly anticipated album in one of London’s most beautiful venues

Nubiyan Twist are a collective born from Leeds’ eclectic music scene with a unique sound that draws from jazz, hip hop, African styles, Latin, R’n’B, reggae and electronics.

Orchestrated by guitarist / producer Tom Excell, the band originally met at Leeds College Of Music. The band’s enigmatic vocalist Nubiya Brandon remembers: “We were on different courses but we all went out and partied together. It was only at the end of the course that we decided to get together to jam and it happened from there.

Originally the band was a DJ, vocalist and sax set-up; I was more into writing lyrics and poetry than music at that time. The line-up quickly expanded; we used the name Ten Trick Pony because there were then 10 in the band but our eventual name came
from a moment catching Lauryn Hill on the radio, talking about a hairstyle called the ‘Nubiyan Twist’.”

Now one of the leading lights in the UK’s new generation of soulful, genre-fluid artists, the Leeds-born and now London-based 12-piece collective have created their finest recordings to date, effortlessly weaving together elements of jazz, soul, hip hop, African styles, Latin, dub, hip hop and electronics in a flow of thought-provoking and life-affirming music.

Recorded at the band’s own self-built Henwood Studio in rural Oxfordshire, Jungle Run fluidly moves through different voices from the band’s circle. The inimitable, timeless vocals of Nubiya Brandon lead the way on the album’s title track about breaking preconceptions and promoting equality, “Where you from? I’m from wherever I be.” Saxophonist Nick Richards vocals the killer first single from the album about inner turmoil and a search for the truth, ‘Tell It To Me Slowly’ while rising Ghanaian star K.O.G. appears on the Afro jams ‘Basa Basa’ and ‘They Talk’. Percussionist Pilo Adami (Nina Miranda / Afrosamba) voices the infectious bossa-jazz jam ‘Borders’. The band also draft in two African legends for guest duties with the original Afrobeat maestro Tony Allen on ‘Ghosts’ and Ethio jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke contributing vibes on the sinuous ‘Addis To London’.

At EartH, prepare to be blown away by the live debut of Nubiyan Twist‘s new tunes. With support for the night coming from Hector Plimmer (live), Waaju, and Werkha (DJ), this is going to be a big night stuffed full of Afrobeat, Hip Hop, Soul, and more that will keep you dancing until the early hours.

In an uncertain world, one thing is for sure; Joel Culpepper has an unforgettable voice and a distinctive style that defy comparison.

Blazing into 2019 with a sizzling slice of bittersweet sunshine soul, Joel and long term collaborator and producer Swindle team up with UK rapper Kojey Radical for latest track, ‘Caroline, No’. Following hard on the heels of Colors of Berlin release ‘Woman’, which has racked up over 5 million YouTube views and 2 million+ Spotify streams, and a guest vocal spot on DJ Yoda‘s ‘London Fields’, ‘Caroline, No’ is the sublime first fruits of an eagerly awaited debut album. Bringing together timeless soul music with seductive and sensual vocals, the album, due for release this year, features collaborations with FKJ, Swindle, Redinho and Guy Chambers, among a litany of stellar musical talent.

Previous releases, including the ‘Skydive’ EP and ‘Tortoise’ saw the cream of the music scene including Grammy Award winning producer Jimmy Hogarth, Roy Davis Jr., and Jools Holland’s Musical Director Phil Veacock, queueing up to work with Joel. His ‘Afraid to Be King’ single was a BBC Radio 6 Music Record of the Week earning him a Gilles Peterson session, with further radio support for Joel coming from Lauren Laverne, Annie Mac, Chris Hawkins, Huw Stephens, Trevor Nelson, Mary Anne Hobbs, DJ Target, Toddla T, Charlie Sloth, Jamie East and Steve Lamacq.

But it is the dynamism, energy and impact of his live shows where Joel is at his undeniable best. Recent outings, including a European tour, a sell-out show at the Jazz Café and appearances at Camp Bestival, Reeperbahn, Holy Groove Festival, Standon Calling, Wilderness Festival, LIM Festival, All Points East, and The Great Escape have showcased honest, real and transcendent music with a vocal talent that is as rare as it is exceptional.

Floating somewhere in the wonky psychedelic ether between Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Flying Lotus, James Alexander Bright’s soft-soulful vocals glide over lush guitars, lo-fi drum tracks and moody, shimmering brass.

Don’t miss the chance to catch James Alexander Bright at this intimate headline show at The Waiting Room after his sold-out debut at Servant Jazz Quarters – on the back of the release of ‘Strange Folk’ on !K7.

James will be playing material from his ‘Mallorca’ and  ‘Strange Folk’ EPs last year as well as new material from a soon-to-be-released EP. ‘Strange Folk’ (a five-track dream of husky croons and forwards-looking-backwards studio techniques) and ‘Mallorca’ (equal parts hazy sunshine psychedelia, lo-fi electronic soul, and melodic pop nous) were supported by DJs on BBC 6 Music, Amazing Radio, the Bandcamp Weekly Show, Dash Radio, Double & Triple J, Reprezent Radio, Soho Radio, and Worldwide FM.

Hejira https://soundcrashmusic.com/hejira-3/ Thu, 07 Mar 2019 19:00:00 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=40262 Hejira are the genre-defying band creating a name for stunningly curated eclecticism.

Hejira developed out of South East London’s vibrant and eclectic music scene, where in 2010 these four multi-instrumentalists set up home studio, “The House of Dreams”. Their debut album Prayer before Birth was received with high critical acclaim, launched by an epic live performance alongside an 18 piece ensemble. Since then, Hejira have cultivated a reputation for creating intelligent, soulful and genre-evaporating music.

Their highly anticipated second album, Thread of Gold, is set to be released in February, and looks to be an profoundly personal exploration of Rahel’s changing relationship with her homeland of Ethiopia after the death of her father. The band joined her in returning to Addis Ababa in 2016 and the record which follows is hewn with eloquent harmonies, subtle instrumentation and flows artfully through acutely personal and moving expression.

Hejira are intricate and effortless performers, seamlessly weaving together the many ribbons of their creativity into a intelligent and soulful sound. The unique synergy between the band lends itself to an incredibly powerful live experience. This is a stunning opportunity to see new music performed live from this groundbreaking band.

Slum Village https://soundcrashmusic.com/slum-village-hph/ Fri, 08 Feb 2019 19:00:52 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=40049 Slum Village bring the iconic sound of their founding-father J Dilla back to life at Scala

One of the most iconic and influential Hip Hop collectives of all time, Slum Village, are returning to London for one massive night of old-school flows and J Dilla-produced classics at Scala. Don’t miss the resurrection of the late, great producer’s sonic legacy on this rare evening with Hip Hop royalty.

Emerging from Detroit’s underground Hip Hop scene in the early 90’s, friends Baatin, T3 and producer J Dilla quickly rose to notoriety for their immaculately produced beats and laid back flows that were unlike anything before them. Their first release thus found its way into the hands of A Tribe Called Quest’s legendary MC Q-Tip, who distributed it amongst Hip Hop’s elite and set in motion a trajectory to fame that saw the Slum Village-sound become incredibly influential during the 90’s and early 2000’s. Particularly, after the release of their now legendary album ‘Fantastic Vol. 2’.

In recent years, the collective has been struck by enormous tragedy with the passing of both J Dilla and Baatin. However, T3 and young producer Young RJ are keeping the work of Dilla alive as they continue to create music and tour the world together. Ever since, the pair boast collaborations with the likes of Kanye West, Phife Dawg, De La Soul and John Legend.

This show will be a rare glimpse into the original work of J Dilla, and into a Hip Hop sound that forged the path for so much of today’s most innovative music. Joined by Lazy Habits, known for their urban British twist New Orleans Jazz, Soul, and Hip Hop, this night is truly unmissable for fans of Hip Hop in its purest form.

TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE DOOR

Dancefloor heroes Norman Jay (MBE), Nicky Siano, and Marshall Jefferson are all coming together for Freak, the biggest disco party of the year

A trifecta of musical prowess, we’ve managed to get these three icons under one roof for a night of boogie, disco and rare grooves. Each pioneers in their own right; this is a one-off occasion to witness a selection of the industries most respected DJ’s… all of whom’s history in the game is dripping in incomparable mirror-balled glamour.

Starting with Nicky Siano, legendary DJ from the golden age of 70’s New York disco. Not only was his club “The Gallery” an integral point in the creation of the disco scene in New York but Siano’s technique was also something that changed the way decks have been used ever since … beatmatching, EQing, and the use of three turntables to create “proto-disco” are all things that we can attribute to this game changer. Original Studio 54 resident, his selections span from soul to funk and gospel… you’ll want to bathe in the presence of this original disco luminary.

Known to many as the “Godfather” of house music, Marshall Jefferson is another music dignitary who has carved a huge name for himself within the industry. Having worked as a producer for Universal Recording Studios in Chicago, Marshall also had a big hand to play in the Chicago house scenes most notorious and influential tracks…

Lastly, presenting Norman Jay…It’s no surprise that Jay has been awarded an MBE for his contributions to music. Having started his career playing in 70’s New York block parties with his uncle, Jay brought back elements of their club-culture to the London scene. Notably Jay was one of the creators of our beloved “KISS” radio, and the “Good Life” soundsystem that was the first to play funk, soul and disco at Notting Hill Carnival. Being the figure who fostered the rare-groove scene here in the UK, it’s what he’s done for the dance scene that deservedly makes him one of the most popular and loved DJ’s that this country has produced.

To keep the party going until the early hours, we also have a host of other DJs, including Waxist and Danuka, who will keep the floor moving and grooving. Very special guests still to be announced…

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to bare witness to three heads who changed dance music forever.

London singer-songwriter Holly Walker brings smart lyrics and exquisite vocals to Servant Jazz Quarters for a night of off-kilter pop.

A soulful London artist, and a fast rising star, this is set to be a very special night of true talent.

Architects of intense contrast the duo’s diverse and precise instrumentation regularly flirts with fragility and raw power. Formed through a shared passion for improvisation, spiritual jazz and heavier experimental music, they have been authoring their own narrative in the new wave of crossover jazz, whilst touring the UK extensively, sharing stages with the likes of Colin Stetson, Melt Yourself Down and Shabaka Hutchings.

This is a rare evening of utterly fearless experimental Jazz, the likes of which are all too sparse in this day and age. Don’t miss this visceral display of improvisation and musical impulse from two pioneering bands of the UK Jazz scene. Get your tickets now.

Kinkajous & Kefaya https://soundcrashmusic.com/kefaya-kinkajous-jzz/ Thu, 22 Nov 2018 19:00:34 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=38490 Two of the most exciting and distinct collectives on the Jazz scene are heading to Moth Club for a massive co-headline show for this year’s EFG London Jazz Festival! Both Kefaya and Kinkajous have become renowned for their eclectic and diverse creations, fusing Jazz with their respective cultural and musical influences.

Kefaya are an award winning musical collective led by UK-based musicians and producers Giuliano Modarelli and Al MacSween. An eclectic  group of immigrants, travellers and international artists, Kefaya seek to find common ground between global folk traditions with a cutting-edge sound rooted firmly in the 21st century. Since winning Best Newcomer at Songlines Music Awards 2017, Kefaya have been gaining a reputation for their virtuosic and mesmerising live shows, performing across Europe and India with a modular line-up ranging from a trio to a nine-piece ensemble.

Co-headlining this unmissable night will be Kinkajous a London based quintet who conjure a passionate, introspective and powerful sound, that draws from their shared love for jazz and electronica. Led by saxophonist/clarinetist Adrien Cau and drummer/producer Benoît Parmentier, their influences range from Flying Lotus, Bonobo, Portico Quartet and Snarky Puppy. With a debut album dropping soon, this band are definitely one to watch.

Their tracks blend whirling synths with warm saxophones and a percussive fusion of real drums and electronic samples. The result is a form of ambient, electronic Jazz akin to that of Floating Points and many of Gondwana Records’ affiliates. However, the idiosyncratic instrumental timbres and evocative melodic lines evident in the works of Kinkajous, set them apart as one of the most distinct and intriguing Jazz collectives around.

This is a rare opportunity to witness first-hand the ever-diversifying parameters of Jazz in the modern era. As Kefaya push these parameters with political sentiment and Middle-Eastern melodies, Kinkajous push them in a different direction with their synthesisers and electronic production. This one is going to be special. Get your tickets now.

Top UK Jazz Flautist Chip Wickham brings his soulful spiritual jazz to EFG London Jazz Festival

Mancunian flautist Chip Wickham has become renowned for his highly eclectic and diverse compositions. Drawing overt inspiration from music of the Middle East, South America and of course North America, Wickham fuses and packages this eclecticism alongside his band – including Taz Modi of Submotion Orchestra – in a way that is nothing short of genius.

Chip Wickham spent his formative years in Manchester’s close-knit jazz scene and from the early ‘90s to now, he has divided his time between the UK, Spain (Madrid) and Doha. He connects the dots between the places and people which have shaped his music, drawing from his unique vantage point. As a dedicated student of the history which has come before him, and a player whose experience spans different worlds of musical styles, it gives a natural weight to the music he makes.

Following his critically acclaimed 2017 debut, La Sombra, his latest record, Shamal Wind, draws on spiritual jazz influences like Yusef Lateef and Sahib Shihab, and rests on Chip’s many-sided experience as a musician, spanning left-field beat experiments to hard-hitting funk heavyweights.

Having previously collaborated with, and been praised by, the likes of Nightmares on Wax, Gilles Peterson, and Craig Charles, Chip’s live shows are legendarily dynamic and immersive. Don’t miss your chance to witness the mind-bending musicianship of this Jazz hero. Get your tickets now.

Mica Paris is one of the UK’s most respected female singers with a career that is full of Top 10 hit singles and worldwide albums. She will take the stage at Islington Assembly Hall for a special night where she is going to be singing songs by the First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald. More worldwide hit albums and singles followed her debut album including ‘Black Angel’, ‘Stay’ and ‘Carefree’, and she has collaborated with many respected artists such as Prince and Jools Holland.

The Seshen are a San Francisco Bay Area-based six-piece led by singer/lyricist Lalin St. Juste and bassist/producer Akiyoshi Ehara. Their forward-thinking sound combines synthesizers, drum machines, live percussion, and entrancing harmonies to create an unmistakable fusion of R&B, synth-pop, and electronic music.

Currently signed to Tru Thoughts Records, the multidimensional works of this fiercely experimental band draw inspiration from across the musical spectrum; from Erykah Badu and Jai Paul to James Blake, Radiohead, and Broadcast. The band also fuses genres and eras that don’t initially appear to fit together such as hip hop, indie rock, early electronica, and 70’s dub. Their unique alchemy of seemingly disparate sounds has led fans and critics alike to describe the band as defying categorization.

The band remains in high demand, supporting live shows with the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote, Thundercat, Petite Noir and many more. Indeed, their live shows are a spectacle to behold, as their deep electronic textures are brought to life alongside a world-class percussion section and a frontwoman in Lalin St Juste that is second to none.

Support comes from synth pop/indie rock band Geographer. As well as Rituals of Mine (FKA Sister Crayon),  a Los Angeles based electronic/downtempo r&b act who make “gorgeously gloomy pop” (Noisey)

This is a truly unmissable show for Electronic/ Jazz fusion fans. Get on this one early!

Boogarins https://soundcrashmusic.com/boogarins-ind/ Sun, 04 Nov 2018 19:00:25 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=37918 Psychedelic blues-based guitar lines set against dazzling supernova synths bumping rhythms.

Four-piece outfit Boogarins have undeniably set out on a quick road to international stardom, getting festival floors swaying from São Paulo’s Lollapalooza to Vancouver’s LEVITATION (not neglecting the renowned desert valley of Coachella earlier this year…). With their consistency and commitment to touring, it’s no surprise that their fanbase is not only at an international level, but that it has blown up at such a speed.

There is an extreme humility to the fact that the band stemmed from the friendship of childhood friends Benkhe and Dinho – who first begun playing together during their school days. A few years later, having recruited a rhythm section, they released their home-recorded LP, ‘As Plantas Que Curam’ in 2013. Fast track from the days of practising in their parents gardens, and you’ve got a band that’s been nominated for Latin Grammy’s, being appraised by the New York Times, and has inspired MOJO magazine to award the band it’s “MOJO rising distinction”.

The bands cultural heritage certainly permeates their sound, but despite Brazil being host to a certain rock-tradition, Boogarins certainly don’t prescribe to it. Bringing a modern lense onto the rich musical history of South-America, the group have found their niche within the psych-community. Their vocals infused with their native tongues of Brazilian- portuguese lend the long and drawn out vowels laid onto the lush, fuzzed out synths. Sensually warm guitar tones that seamlessly glide under the ethereal voice of Dinho Almeida and melodic repetitions through clouds of reverb… they certainly make us nostalgic for Tame Impala’s early work.

Joining Boogarins is one man band Chiminyo who will

With glowing global praise, prepare to be launched into a breezy fuzz-rock & Tropicalia fusion that makes the cosmic collision of Boogarins.

Jon Hopkins’ new album, Singularity, his first since 2013’s Immunity, is due for release on 4th May 2018 on Domino Records.

Singularity begins and ends on the same note: a universe beginning, expanding, and contracting towards the same infinitesimal point. Where Immunity – his hypnotic breakthrough LP – charted the dark alternative reality of an epic night out, Singularityexplores the dissonance between dystopian urbanity and the green forest. It is a journey that returns to where it began – from the opening note of foreboding to the final sound of acceptance.

Shaped by his experiences with meditation and trance states, the album flows seamlessly from rugged techno to transcendent choral music, from solo acoustic piano to psychedelic ambient. Its epic musical palette is visceral and emotionally honest: with a destructive opener full of industrial electronics and sonic claustrophobia and a redemptive, pure end on solo piano, this album reflects the psychological states Hopkins lived through during the writing process.

Perfectly fusing 00’s indie with 80’s pop nostalgia, French quartet Keep Dancing Inc are fast earning themselves a reputation as one of the most sonically unique guitar bands around. 808 drum machines and retro synths coalesce with angular guitar riffs and irresistibly catchy vocal lines as this rising indie band serve up a post-modern cocktail of masterfully crafted pop.

One listen to their latest singles “Don’t Know” and “Pornstar”, is enough to take you straight back to summer evenings and drives at dusk. However, behind the feelgood timbres and nostalgic instrumentation, lie poignant lyrics that deal with more pressing and progressive social issues than the average indie band. It’s this ethos, that forms the foundation of what they call “Cold Zouk”, their very own genre, aesthetic and musical meta-narrative that is driving indie away from its masochistic stigma towards equality and inclusivity. Undoubtedly then, this Parisien outfit command your undivided attention, as well as your best dance moves.

Singer-songwriter Jono McCleary, takes the stage at Redon. McCleery’s eclectic and visceral performances have earned him wide critical acclaim, having been previously described as “Miles Davis, Massive Attack, John Martyn, Fink, and Radiohead wrapped up in one exquisitely produced sound.”

Born deaf, McCleery only became able to hear at age 5, and only picked up the guitar as an eighteen-year-old before quickly honing his craft on the London live circuit and then touring with the likes of Bonobo, Jose Gonzalez, Little Dragon and Jamie Woon.

Jono McCleary’s breath-taking and awe-inspiring talent, and his deeply emotional performances, make this show an absolute must-see. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness the rising star on this intimate evening.

Sons Of Kemet – Sold Out https://soundcrashmusic.com/sons-of-kemet-koko/ Tue, 23 Oct 2018 18:00:44 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=34640 The most explosive force in UK Jazz

After selling out their intimate album launch (Your Queen is a Reptile) at Total Refreshment Centre in a matter of hours, Sons of Kemet are returning to the capital for a full-scale show of gritty jazz at KOKO.

The credentials accumulated by the group are astonishing; led by saxophonist, clarinettist and composer Shabaka Hutchings who was awarded the title of ‘BBC New Generation Artist’, this is a ‘supergroup’ of sorts, featuring Theon Cross on tuba and both Seb Rochford (Polar Bear, Babyshambles) and Tom Skinner (Melt Yourself Down, Mulatu Astatke) on drums. Together, this eclectic group of musicians come together to weave a musical tapestry of jazz that draws upon Afrobeat, dub, Caribbean soca, and grime, to create a hard-hitting, addictive, and groundbreak sound. Live shows from this band are becoming the stuff of legends.

At KOKO, Sons of Kemet will unleash their full potential on the lucky crowd. Expect wonderfully guttural brass belches, drum beats that will keep you wanting more, and a frenzy of exhilarating melodies.
