Two absolute legends in the game, LTJ Bukem and Roni Size, are reuniting for a double headline show of mind-blowing drum ‘n’ bass.

Emerging out of the late 80’s as a DJ, LTJ Bukemdiscovered his passion for drum and bass when exploring the realms of jazz fusion. So it’s natural that when Bukem’s career as a DJ progressed in the early 90‘s and he found himself delving in to the studio, it was these frantic breakbeats in tandem with the melodic, yet almost awry basslines of jazz instrumentation that informedBukem’s creations, developing a progressive and textured sound equal parts anthemic and tranquil. The album was titled ‘Logical Progression’ and markedBukemas an innovator, a tag that has stuck through his work on his own esteemed Good Looking Records imprint, and still bears strong today as Bukem continues to DJ extensively across the globe under his ‘Progression Session’ banner.

Bristol native Roni Size is one of the U.K. jungle scene’s most respected names, with production credits spanning dozens of labels, projects, and releases. Although not as quick to rise to acclaim (either critical or popular) as peers such as Goldie or LTJ Bukem, Size’s influence as a producer, label owner, and committed underground magnate figured him as one of the emerging sound’s true pioneers. The breakout success of his debut album New Forms (including Britain’s prestigious Mercury Award) finally confirmed his stature and vaulted him to a greater degree of popularity than any other drum’n’bass producer.

See you down the front!

Jon Hopkins Wed, 18 Mar 2020 23:59:11 +0000

It is with great pleasure that Jon Hopkins announces Polarity – a new tour for 2020 – which follows on from the incredibly successful Singularity tour, where he performed sold-out headline live shows, festival dates and DJ appearances across the globe.

Taking in Royal Albert Hall London, Sage Gateshead, Brighton Dome, Salle Pleyel Paris, Helsinki Music Centre and Berlin’s Philharmonie – to name just a few – Polarity will, Jon says, tether together “the two disparate elements of harsh and fragile in my music.” He explains, “by going between the two, we’ll hopefully create some profound moments of stillness.”

Playing grand piano for parts of the show, he will be joined on stage by a small group of consummate musicians and long-time friends, consisting of acclaimed producer and guitarist Leo Abrahams, violinist and arranger Emma Smith and cellist Laura Moody.

Presenting his live show in seated venues will present a fascinating challenge for both performer and audience. “Right now I have a set that’s tailored to festivals and to standing crowds and intoxicated people,” he says, “and that’s been amazing, but I would say my deepest nature lies in the stillness, the meditative side of my music.”

Praise for Singularity:

“His long standing enchantment with nature, electricity and mindfulness glimmers anew on Singularity” Q4

“One of the most celebrated electronic musicians of his generation.” New Yorker

“A sonic realization of a better world, conceived in the depths of psychedelic experimentation” MOJO 4

“Pitched between heat-seeking acid house and ambient bliss, the techno auteur’s first album since 2013 is a beat-music odyssey that thrums with spiritual resonance” Pitchfork, Best New Music

“A beautiful bastard of a record”  Mixmag 9/10

“Hopkins remains in ascension and no one is on his level right now” CLASH 8/10

“Hopkins’ open-minded take on an altered state becomes an experience that reveals itself a little more with every glorious listen” Loud & Quiet 9/10

“Singularity amplifies Hopkins’ music to blockbuster proportions.” RA

Wovoka Gentle Wed, 18 Mar 2020 11:00:48 +0000 + Pet Shimmers

+ Scrounge

Soundcrash presents an explosive live show from one of London’s most cutting edge bands. Expect a brilliant cosmic swirling blend of electronics, alternative folk and psychedelia.

Wovoka Gentle is a British folk/acoustic trio comprising twins Imogen Mason and Ellie Mason together with William J. Stokes.

With roots in folk and Americana songwriting, the Wovoka sound draws upon the psychedelic soundscapes of the late 60s as well as contemporary experimental, pop and collage music; marrying classic instrumentation with sampling, analogue synthesis and sound manipulation.

One of the most alluring components of their sound is their near-perfect vocal harmonies, where the intimacy of its members becomes evident. There’s a hymn-like resonance in these moments, which is echoed lyrically as the band deftly tackle religious themes of prayer, sin and redemption.

Having signed to the iconic Nude Records in early 2018, Wovoka Gentle have now released debut album ‘Start Clanging Cymbals’ on the 7th June 2019.

After a string of sold-out show’s, we’re expecting tickets for this one to sell out fast. Please act fast to avoid missing out.

“Hard to classify and even harder not to love” – Uncut

“You have to admire Start Clanging Cymbals’ ambition and self-assured daring” – Mojo

Cinematic Orchestra Sat, 22 Feb 2020 23:59:40 +0000

The Cinematic Orchestra will be performing at Brixton Academy on Saturday, February  22nd 2020 along with some very special guests.

Very limited early bird tickets will be available.

Off the back of an extensive “To Believe” album tour which included a three-night residency at London’s iconic Roundhouse, TCO are also excited to announce that they will be headlining Brixton Academy for the first time on 22nd February 2020. Brixton has special resonance with both Jason and Dom, not only because of its status as a legendary venue but also because they both used to live in Brixton. Dom in fact worked at the venue when it was still an independent and saw hundreds of bands play there. With a hefty support line-up still to be announced the event will serve as a fitting celebration a year on from the release of “To Believe”. The band will also be debuting a show in collaboration with Strangeloop Studios (the team behind flying Lotus’ visuals), with more announcements still to be made about the night.

Slum Village with full live band: Abstract Orchestra Fri, 07 Feb 2020 23:59:14 +0000 + Illa J

+ Mr Thing (J Dilla Set)

Slum Village bring the iconic sound of their founding-father J Dilla back to life at Electric Brixton.

They will perform with full live band Abstract Orchestra on J Dilla’s Birthday.

One of the most iconic and influential Hip Hop collectives of all time, Slum Village, are returning to London for one massive night of old-school flows and J Dilla-produced classics at Electric Brixton. Don’t miss the resurrection of the late, great producer’s sonic legacy on this rare evening with Hip Hop royalty.

Emerging from Detroit’s underground Hip Hop scene in the early 90’s, friends BaatinT3 and producer J Dilla quickly rose to notoriety for their immaculately produced beats and laid back flows that were unlike anything before them. Their first release thus found its way into the hands of A Tribe Called Quest’s legendary MC Q-Tip, who distributed it amongst Hip Hop’s elite and set in motion a trajectory to fame that saw the Slum Village-sound become incredibly influential during the 90’s and early 2000’s. Particularly, after the release of their now legendary album ‘Fantastic Vol. 2’.

In recent years, the collective has been struck by enormous tragedy with the passing of both J Dilla and Baatin. However, T3 and young producer Young RJ are keeping the work of Dilla alive as they continue to create music and tour the world together. Ever since, the pair boast collaborations with the likes of Kanye WestPhife DawgDe La Soul and John Legend.

Joe Armon-Jones Thu, 06 Feb 2020 23:59:29 +0000

Already receiving critical acclaim across the board, Joe Armon-Jones’ sophomore album ‘Turn To Clear View’ is being hailed as a remarkable moment in his career.

Praised or pushing the boundaries of sound ,‘Turn To Clear View’ finds ArmonJones is expanding into exciting new territory. It’s a set which blurs the lines between bass-heavy dub, contemporary club culture and his background as a pioneering force in the modern jazz scene. That singular vision is heightened with flourishes of R&B, hip-hop and p-funk. It’s music of substance – relevant to the here and now, but sure to be heralded as an influence in the years that follow.

Turn To Clear View has been previewed by key tracks ‘Icy Roads (Sracked)’, and ‘Yellow Dandelion’ which featured neo-soul visionary Gerogie Anne Mudlrow. The tracks have received support at 6 Music, 1Xtra and Radio 1 from DJs including Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, Benji B, Jamz Supernova, Tom Ravenscroft and Huey Morgan

Between his highly acclaimed solo career and his work with the influential Ezra Collective, Joe ArmonJones is at the epicentre of the London underground scene. The album reflects this with features by hard hitting rapper Jehst, Obongjayar (a collaborator with Richard Russell) , soul vocals Asheber, regular bandmates Oscar Jerome, Moses Boyd (a resident DJ at 1Xtra) and Nubya Garcia (signed to Domino as part of Nérija), whose uncompromising yet accessible sax on ‘You Didn’t Care’ stands out as a highlight.

Joe Armon-Jones has previously played Glastonbury, SXSW, Boiler Room and a sold-out headline show at London’s Village Underground, and has toured with the likes of Ata Kak and Pharoahe Monch

An intimate show from one of hip hop’s biggest names.

The Brooklyn-based MC earned his stripes as one of the most lyrically-gifted, socially aware and politically insightful rappers to emerge in the last 20 years.

I’m trying to reach the apex of where I am now, but without turning my back on or dismissing what I’ve done before.”

After nearly 20 years of releasing mesmerizing music, Talib Kweli stands as one of the world’s most talented and most accomplished Hip Hop artists. Whether working with Mos Def as one-half of Black Star, partnering with producer Hi-Tek for Reflection Eternal, releasing landmark solo material or collaborating with Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Just Blaze, J Dilla, or Madlib, Kweli commands attention by delivering top-tier lyricism, crafting captivating stories and showing the ability to rhyme over virtually any type of instrumental.

One of the undisputed heavyweight acts in music, Music Has the Right to Children stands as the Scottish duo’s magnum opus, made all the impressive by the fact that it was their debut record.

An adult meditation on childhood, concerned with play, naïveté and nostalgia, all tinted with rosy pastoralism, the sensitivity of the compositions marry beautifully with Byron’s orchestration of the gamelan sound.

+ The Pharcyde

Mos Def will be performing a full live show as part of Beat Horizon at Brixton Academy.

Yasiin Bey, the artist previously known as Mos Def really doesn’t need any introduction: Exploding into public consciousness as part of Blackstar (with Talib Kweli) in 1998, it was Mos’ debut ‘Black On Both Sides’ a year later that rocketed the New York rapper to astronomical heights, propelled by universal acclaim for the LP, which continues to be held up as one of the genre’s greatest ever albums.

The near two decades since then has seen an unprecedented output of critically acclaimed work, both as a solo artist and fierce collaborator.  Working closely with big hitters from across hip-hop including the likes of The Roots, De La Soul, Madlib, Common, DJ Shadow, Kanye West (signing to G.O.O.D Records for a spell) as well as musicians from outside of the rap sphere including Gil Scott Heron, Bobby Womack and The Gorillaz amongst countless others, Mos Def has never been shy in sharing his genius with other artists to create something special.

P.P Arnold is the rare type of performer who can make powerful soul vocals seem as effortless as the incredible career which she built with them.

Having started her career in California as a backing singer for Ike and Tina Turner, she eventually found herself in London where a tour with the Rolling Stones helped her strike up an unlikely friendship with Mick Jagger. It was he who convinced her to begin a solo career, signing to Immediate records, with which she recorded iconic tracks such as “The First Cut is the Deepest” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”. She also went on to record the album “The Turning Tide”, produced by Eric Clapton and Barry Gibb, although it wasn’t released until 2017. Since then, she has gone on to work on everything from west end shows, to lending her vocals across a whole host of genres, from acid house to britpop. Her role within British musical history is undeniable and today, she continues to record, with an energy as strong as ever.

In October, she comes to London for an evening of stunning soul and jaw-dropping vocals. She’ll be  performing her classics as well as new songs from my latest album, ‘The New Adventures of PP Arnold’. In addition, Steve Cradock will be musically-directing the gig for a very special performance.

It’s set to be an unmissable night of music for anyone with a heart for Britain’s rich musical history.

Since then, he has become one of the most in demand MCs of his generation putting out singles like ‘Tell Me Why’ and ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ as well as working on independent reggae labels like Fashion Records.  His debut album ‘Double Trouble’ (1992) and work on labels like Justice Records has led to global recognition. In the years since, Levy has collaborated with the likes of Sly & Robbie, Shaggy, Sting International and Artful Dodger amongst many more, and remains a true stalwart of the UK urban music scene who has much to offer and plenty of unique ideas up his sleeve. He’s gone on to be a major influence of the London Grime scene, and his BBC Radio 1 recordings alongside the likes of Dizzee Rascal, JME & BBK has racked up well over 10 million views online.

This December, General Levy comes to Electric Brixton for fiery floor-filling celebration of a pioneer of London’s world-shattering underground scene.

Joining General Levy and M- Beat is Drum N Bass pioneer Grooverider who’ll be performing a one of Jungle set for the night. Filling out this colossal bill is Serial Killaz, Ray Keith, Ragga Twins Crew, James Rail and a very very special guest TBA!

Hannah Williams & The Affirmations Tue, 10 Dec 2019 07:38:23 +0000 Hannah Williams and the Affirmations are the current darlings of the worldwide Soul scene. Having been sampled by Jay Z on the Grammy-nominated song “4:44”, they were catapulted around the globe. This has lead them to work with Tyler The Creator, Guy Chambers and Pete Rock, to name a few. They have also been personally championed by Giles Peterson, Huey Morgan and the late, great masters themselves: Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley. From the success of this and their debut album “Late Nights and Heartbreak”, they’ve played such festivals as Montreal Jazz, Central Park Summerstage, Pori Jazz, Quebec City Festival, North Sea Jazz and prestigious venues such as Ronnie Scott’s and Blue Note Tokyo.

Hailed by many as the next Amy Winehouse or Aretha Franklin, Hannah Williams is an undeniable force. On stage she is a whirlwind of love, longing, anger and everything in between. Complex Magazine refers to Hannah’s voice as “Incredibly soulful and powerful.” After all, it was her vocal that inspired Jay Z to wake up at 4:44am and record what he later described as “The most gut-wrenching song [he’s] ever written”.

Her Bristol-based band, The Affirmations have also been highly praised for their “Stomp-your-feet and clap-your-hands type of soul music that lit up the 60s and 70s” – Popmatters

Bath // The Forum // Friday 6th December

“Infectious US pop on a bed of southern African grooves, sung with all the power and joy of a gospel choir.” – Songlines

The London African Gospel Choir was co-founded by Crystal Kassi to help London’s African community to promote the gospel, create a platform of excellence for African gospel singers and musicians, and popularise the African interpretations of gospel music. Today they announce a full UK tour performing the classic Paul Simon album ‘Graceland’ in full live on stage.

The London African Gospel Choir have received extremely positive testimony from not only the public but also internationally renowned artists including Annie Lennox of Eurythmics and Paul Simon himself.

As well as performing with artists such as Emeli Sandé and Mumford and Sons, the group tour their own exceptional rendition of the iconic Paul Simon’s Graceland across the UK and most recently selling out shows on the East Coast of the States where they made a powerful impact on the public.

“What makes us different is that we all come from different countries in the African Diaspora,” she explains. “We have people from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Kenya, Zaire, Ivory Coast, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Uganda and the Congo… We all come from different churches as well. The common denominator is our faith, although we welcome everybody.” Said Kassi.” You could say that this is a perpetuation of Paul Simon’s Graceland legacy, the way it has brought African nations together through culture.”

What also sets them apart is their repertoire – a dazzling reflection of the choir’s diverse membership and that includes secular songs with a positive message. It’s the meaning of the words that counts and Paul Simon’s Graceland – acclaimed as “one of the most iconic records in rock and roll history” on its release in 1986 – is a perfect fit with its uplifting lyrics and South African rhythms and melodies. They are releasing their long awaited first CD in August 2019.

On this huge UK Tour The London African Gospel Choir should feel right at home on stage with their joyous singing and dancing, and their unforgettable arrangements of Paul Simon hits such as The Boy In The Bubble, Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes and You Can Call Me Al.

Parra For Cuva Thu, 05 Dec 2019 19:00:44 +0000 “Gorgeous, dappled electronics with analogue flourishes…” Clash

Indulging in his relentless fascination for sound and harmony, Nicolas Demuth, aka Parra for Cuva, commenced his quest for music at a very young age. Starting with classical piano and taking stops in Jazz, Pop and Indie music, the young artist soon developed a strong passion for electronic music that made him leave the countryside and move to big and creative Berlin. Using musical instruments, synthesizers and digital music editing, the audio designer masters the art of creating intelligent, intertwined music pieces from melodies, soft beats and sounds that he records in daily life. The result can be witnessed listening to his new album “Paspatou”: A piece full of well-mended electronica that touches the soul, somewhere between melancholy and euphoria and most of all: well beyond mainstream electronic music.

Martin Kohlstedt Tue, 29 Oct 2019 19:00:51 +0000 + James Heather

Martin Kohlstedt, producer, pianist & composer with a contemporary approach of mixing classical and avantgarde music styles.

Having begun his musical journey as a trained jazz pianist, Kohlstedt went on to leave his mark across the electronic dance floors of Europe, working with bands Marbert Rocel & Karocel. Alongside this, he began his composition, scoring the movies of international film-makers, audiobooks and theatre.

Today, he has turned his attention back to the piano, using a contemporary experimental approach to classical and avantgarde styles. To perform, for Kohlstedt, is not simply to enact but to hold genuine musical conversation with his instruments. During extensive live touring across Germany & Europe, he has been able to refine and develop his compositions, incorporating the piano and electronic instrumentation. For him, music is never set in stone but a matter to be perpetually negotiated; something which brings a unique and powerful improvisational tone to his performance. He describes this as “modular composing”, a theory and approach which has caught the imagination of many, and led to him being invited to a TEDx talk in 2017.

With three stunning albums behind him, Kohlstedt continues to experiment and capture the imaginations of audiences and other creatives alike. His previous albums have been reinterpreted and influenced the likes of Christian Loffler, Douglas Dare, & Mathias Kaden. In addition to this, he’s worked with the likes of Rough Trade, finetunes and Broken Silence.

Youngblood Brass Band Tue, 22 Oct 2019 18:00:16 +0000 Tickets available on the door!

A roof-tearing show of fist-pumping anthems from a Brass Band like no other.

Youngblood Brass Band flouts convention in an ecstatic, raucous, incendiary fashion, taking the form of a New Orleans brass band and morphing it into a punked-out hip-hop behemoth of groove and purpose.

Formed in Wisconsin, but hailing from across the US, Youngblood Brass Band have been unleashing their crash course in genre-bending on stages worldwide since 2000. Branching the space between the drama of hip-hop and the party of brass bands, they fill a unique space across the musical spectrum. Their White-hot live shows have secured the band’s status as an incredible group to witness, whether in an intimate club setting or in front of thousands on a festival stage. Having signed to UK based Tru Thoughts a few years ago, home to equally raucous acts such as Hot 8 Brass Band and hip-hop artist Ty, they’re continuing to evolve their powerful sound. On stages in the states and overseas, the verdict has been issued: the band has never sounded so good. Youngblood Brass Band has become an institution, one that demands to be seen and heard. Rigorous dancing is also acceptable.

“There’s no way around it: Neil Cowley is quite a big deal.” – Drowned in Sound

Dynamic composer Neil Cowley brings his new live show to London’s Pickle Factory this October.
Neil has recently embraced a new musical direction, incorporating electronic, ambient and neo-classical production to his improvisational piano playing. This musical shift was first reflected in the choice of artists on 2018’s ‘Spacebound Tapes’ that featured remixes by Rival Consoles, Throwing Snow, Christian Löffler and Vessels. Earlier this year his ‘Grains & Motes’ collaborative EP with Erased Tapes composer Ben Lukas Boysen was described in The Guardian as “a texturally interesting world that will appeal to Nils Frahm fans…slow-motion hymns, working within deliberately constricted melodic phrases but always wringing out a quiet grandeur and a beautiful sadness.” Neil co-wrote with Maribou State for their album ‘Kingdoms In Colour’, and recently remixed their collaborator Holly Walker who appears as a guest vocalist on his new EP ‘Beat Infinitum’.
Neil debuted this new show at Ghost Notes in February and recently played a sold out show at Oslo in Hackney. With less than 200 tickets available for this show, this is set to be a very special evening of new music from one of the UK’s most talented composers. Tickets will sell out fast.

Carlos Cipa Thu, 03 Oct 2019 09:41:12 +0000 The classically-trained pianist, comes to London for an incredibly rare show, as cinematic as it is intimate.

Carlos Cipa is a classically trained pianist, composer and producer who combines classical concepts with pop culture- without reservations or cliches. Besides his solo work, he is a keen collaborator, creating music for film, TV, and theatre; his distinct orchestral compositions remain as intimate as they are cinematic.  Precisely because Carlos Cipa breaks apart conventional musical structures and constantly exploits unfamiliar sound worlds, his sound remains unique and with it he captures crowds of big festivals just the same as the audience of hundreds of clubs and concert halls all over Europe.

Later this year, he is set to release his third album Retronyms which sees Cipa bring together his background as a classically trained pianist and composer with his interest for experimental forms and pop music. On Retronyms, improvisation goes hand in hand with the high art of composition while acoustic(and partly unusual)instruments like the celestameet with electronic production methods or analogue synthesizers. Each note on this album is meticulously thought through and yet Retronyms radiates with visceral liveliness.

This October, Carlos Cipa comes to the stunning St Pancras Old Church, London for an incredibly rare show to perform his upcoming new album along with stunning original material.

Known for atmospheric instrumental productions, DJ Krush’s music is darkly mysterious and seriously addictive, completely befitting his past as part of Japanese crime syndicate yakuza. On the topic of his switch from crime to music, Ishi said “my body wasn’t built for breaking, DJing was the thing for me,” and Japan’s music industry has rejoiced ever since.

Upon entering the industry, Krush, with his experimental beats and instrumental sounds, changed the face of Japanese Hip Hop at a time when it was dominated by the American rap scene. Ryan Vail & Elma Orkestra present “Borders” Fri, 14 Jun 2019 22:59:54 +0000

Last Tickets Remaining

Uniting two of Ireland’s most forward-thinking musical propositions – Eoin O’Callaghan AKA Elma Orkestra and Ryan Vail – ‘Borders’ is a singular collaborative project. Spanning symphonic ambience to widescreen electronica, it’s a genre-warping meeting of the minds from two of the country’s most innovative artists.

Unable to ignore the political questions arising from across the UK and Ireland, O’Callaghan and Vail collaborate together on this stunning project to explore the concept of borders and the dissonance between the abstraction of politics and the realities of the landscape which form it. Accompanied with drone footage taken of the natural phenomena which lie across the Irish border, and the frontiers seen within nature itself, this A/V show uniquely explores a hard-hitting current issue with an unsettling tranquility and mesmerising curiosity.

Talking about the show to BBC Radio 4, Vail explains his use of the drone footage, “I wanted to get across the beauty, that beauty spills over the lines, if you use a wider lens, you don’t see the border, its invisible”. O’Callaghan adds, “I think for us it was about forgetting the politics about it, and just showing the border for what it actually is; it’s this beautiful piece of land that we live on.”

This stunning eight track project sees O’Callaghan and Vail masterfully blur the contours between contemporary electronic and classical realms. This breaking of new ground – of pushing boundaries and thwarting expectations via attention to detail and a joint penchant for analogue equipment – is what underpins ‘Borders’. Tickets selling fast now!

The most innovative rap crew the world has seen

In the early 90’s, when gangsta’ rap consumed the airwaves, and the majority of West Coast rappers strapped on their Locs, Chuck Taylor’s & Ben Davis’, The Pharcyde decidedly maintained a willfully weird vision. Opting to stay true to themselves with their left field but still South-Central sensibility, rap had seen few groups so self-deprecating and so smart, four visionary rappers adroitly able to split the difference between helium-voiced and hard-core.

Listening to “Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde” two full decades after its release, its sense of timeliness is unmistakable. Every song on the album inverts a hoary hip-hop cliché. With classics like “Oh Shit,” “Otha Fish”, “Ya’ Mama,” and hit single, “Passing Me By,” it is not surprising that it shipped over a million units, garnered comparisons to De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest, and everyone from Pitchfork Media to The Source has hailed it as one of the greatest albums ever made.

Speaking on the passage of time, their second release “LabCabInCalifornia” has revealed exactly how far-reaching The Pharcyde’s vision was. From enlisting a young and then unknown James Yancey aka J DILLA to produce beats on the classic “Runnin”, to collaborating with director Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich” “Adaptation”) on the video for “Drop,” it has consistently reinforced their steadfast refusal to tread familiar artistic grounds.

Today, The Pharcyde continue to hone their individual abilities while still carrying on the name & legacy in its original fashion. At Earth, expect them to seduce their audience with the same boyish charm that founded them at the beginning. Joined by Jungle Brother’s Africa Baby Bam who’ll be spinning old school hip hop tunes, this is simply an unmissable show for true hip hop fans.

KRS-One Fri, 17 May 2019 20:00:05 +0000 Lyrical legend KRS-One brings the ultimate night of Hip Hop to South London

When it comes to Hip Hop, no one is as consistent and influential as KRS-One. It is impossible to discuss Hip Hop’s history without discussing KRS-One. His reputation as both a live performer and as Hip Hop’s resident “Teacha” has reached mythic proportions. As author Tavis Smiley has put it; “You are going to encounter a man who has sincerely sought to develop a relevant, honest and contemporary interpretation of world history, culture, religion, and philosophy.”

At Electric Brixton, KRS-One will work through the hip hop masterpieces he’s created throughout his life – from songs that changed the very fabric of hip hop (Poetry, Rappaz R N Dainja, Outta Here) to tunes that have become a part of hip hop history (Sound of da Police, The MC).

Joining him is an unreal line up of Ty and Blak Twang. Ty,British rapper signed to Big Dada, is best known for his lyrical frankness and honest portrayals of everyday life, making him part of the fast-growing movement of British socially conscious rappers. Blak Twang, famed for his charismatic live performances, is another pioneering British rapper who has fast gained a massive South London fanbase.

Don’t miss out on catching KRS-One, the legend himself, at South London’s iconic Electric Brixton, joined by a string of impressive artists in their own right. A holy grail of nights for hip hop fans.

Ulrich Schnauss with support from Kelpe Fri, 17 May 2019 18:00:08 +0000 Ulrich Schnauss presents ‘Now is a Timeless Present’, a career-spanning retrospective encompassing key works from the past two decades. The German electronic composer will be selecting fundamental music from his back catalogue.

At once uplifting and otherworldly, the music of Ulrich Schnauss utilizes multi-layered synthesizers to map out an aural escape route from the trappings of a reality limiting our imagination. Born in Kiel in 1977 and inspired by the alternative guitar bands of the late 80s and early 90s as well as Acid House and early electronica, Schnauss began developing his own distinct sonic palette. Melding delicate dream-pop sensibilities with ecstatic electronic excess and defying the constraints of music genre boundaries.

After a move to Berlin in the late 90s, Schnauss felt confident enough to begin releasing  ‘little electronica pieces’ under his own name – 2001s ‘Far Away Trains Passing By’. Four further studio albums have followed since then: ‘A Strangely Isolated Place’ (2003), ‘Goodbye’ (2007), ‘A Long Way to Fall’ (2013) and ‘No Further Ahead Than Today’ (2016). He’s a prolific remixer and a member of the last Tangerine Dream Line Up picked by the late Edgar Froese.

After an initial struggle to perform the unique, interchanging nuances of his compositions live, the arrival of Ableton’s Live software has enabled him to build new arrangements on the spot, lending diversity and distinction to each performance. ‘I can react to the atmosphere of the room or re-interpret the pieces in a way that’s reflecting my mood,’ he explains, ‘sometimes playing more ambient; sometimes more rhythm-orientated versions of the songs.’

Joining Ulrich Schnauss on stage is his long-term collaborator, London-based visual artist Nat Urazmetova. In her live visuals the organic and synthesised, amorphous and elusive, fluid and uncanny coalesce, mutate and continuously evolve in the free-flow of improvisation. Through shifting the accustomed modes of perception, the visual performance threads the different narratives of seeing, sensing and relating to the sonic counterpart.

Mesmerising electronic artist, Kelpe, will be starting off the evening. Kelpe’s influences range from the bleeps & bass of classic Warp artists to the funk of Sly Stone, and the minimalism of Steve Reich + Harmonia to the percussive space-scapes of Tortoise + Do Make Say Think. The diversity of the music that inspires Kelpe finds reflection in his own sonic adventures, informing his ever evolving sound, combining as map and compass to guide his lunar-bound b-boy throw downs.

Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad Fri, 17 May 2019 18:00:06 +0000 Two of hip hop’s most accomplished producers bring their new highly acclaimed live project, featuring a 9-piece brass and string section, to the UK for the first time.

When two of hip-hop’s most accomplished composers & producers join forces on a new project you know the results are going to be special.

Ali Shaheed Muhammad (founding member of A Tribe Called Quest and super producer in his own right) & Adrian Younge (Black Dynamite, Jay-Z, Ghostface Killah, Wu Tang Clan, Talib Kweli etc)  began their work together in 2013 on the critically acclaimed Souls of Mischief There Is Only Now and Kendrick Lamar’s untitled unmastered albums.  Their partnership cemented on their celebrated music score work for Marvel’s Luke Cage.

Inspired by the sonic aesthetic of Luke Cage their creative dynamic was crystalised in a brand new project ‘The Midnight Hour’, which was released to rapturous acclaim in 2018.

The Midnight Hour is black excellence: an ode to the cultural sophistication of the Harlem Renaissance that occured in New York in the 1920s.  The Midnight Hour album is not just Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge, it’s two of hip-hop’s greatest producers with a tight rhythm section and a full orchestra as well as some of the most celebrated names in contemporary hip-hop, R&B, soul & jazz including CeeLo Green, Raphael Saadiq, Marsha Ambrosius, Bilal, Eryn Allen Kane, Karolina, Questlove and more.

They take this snapshot of this chapter of Black American culture on the road this Spring performing the acclaimed album with full live band, string and brass section. With support from the UK’s Pete Beardsworth, this is quite simply an unmissable night of exceptional Jazz. Don’t sleep.
