Tickets On Sale Friday 1pm

Genre-defying producer & songwriter brings a performance of raw impassioned new music.

LAPP’s multi-genre approach to songwriting and musicality is made obvious by his wide and ranging career so far. Having fronted the rock band “Wild Rossa & the 88”, his expressions have progressed to include Electronic, Jazz, Latin, Soul & Pop influences. From this, come his alternative R&B infused tunes which have gained him serious acclaim from the likes of Earmilk, Tom Robinson & Louder than War. . Still featuring emotive lyrics and telling tales of the human condition, LAPP now pulls his style of song-writing toward a strong focus on distinctively digitised terrains of instrumentation, producing something entirely new.

Following a SOLD OUT show at The Slaughtered Lamb earlier this year, LAPP has moved from strength to strength, with EP Farfalla receiving an incredibly warm reaction, and opening up opportunities across the UK festival scene.

With new music on the way, LAPP continues to combine the lyricism of the soul-searching singer-songwriter and the stylistic groove of electronic music. Full of anthems, ballads, shakers and heartbreakers, producer singer-songwriter LAPP performs with a rawness and passion that is sure to make you think as well as feel in a live show that is not to be missed.

A roof-tearing show of fist-pumping anthems from a Brass Band like no other.

Youngblood Brass Band flouts convention in an ecstatic, raucous, incendiary fashion, taking the form of a New Orleans brass band and morphing it into a punked-out hip-hop behemoth of groove and purpose.

Formed in Wisconsin, but hailing from across the US, Youngblood Brass Band have been unleashing their crash course in genre-bending on stages worldwide since 2000. Branching the space between the drama of hip-hop and the party of brass bands, they fill a unique space across the musical spectrum. Their White-hot live shows have secured the band’s status as an incredible group to witness, whether in an intimate club setting or in front of thousands on a festival stage. Having signed to UK based Tru Thoughts a few years ago, home to equally raucous acts such as Hot 8 Brass Band and hip-hop artist Ty, they’re continuing to evolve their powerful sound. On stages in the states and overseas, the verdict has been issued: the band has never sounded so good. Youngblood Brass Band has become an institution, one that demands to be seen and heard. Rigorous dancing is also acceptable.

The Queen of Northern Soul headlines two unmissable nights of stunning vocals steeped in the city’s rich musical history.

P.P Arnold is the rare type of performer who can make powerful soul vocals seem as effortless as the incredible career which she built with them.

Having started her career in California as a backing singer for Ike and Tina Turner, she eventually found herself in London where a tour with the Rolling Stones helped her strike up an unlikely friendship with Mick Jagger. It was he who convinced her to begin a solo career, signing to Immediate records, with which she recorded iconic tracks such as “The First Cut is the Deepest” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”. She also went on to record the album “The Turning Tide”, produced by Eric Clapton and Barry Gibb, although it wasn’t released until 2017. Since then, she has gone on to work on everything from west end shows, to lending her vocals across a whole host of genres, from acid house to britpop. Her role within British musical history is undeniable and today, she continues to record, with an energy as strong as ever.

In October, she comes to London for an evening of stunning soul and jaw-dropping vocals. She’ll be  performing her classics as well as new songs from my latest album, ‘The New Adventures of PP Arnold’. In addition, Steve Cradock will be musically-directing the gig for a very special performance.

It’s set to be an unmissable night of music for anyone with a heart for Britain’s rich musical history.

Carlos Cipa https://soundcrashmusic.com/carlos-cipa/ Thu, 03 Oct 2019 09:41:12 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=43098 The classically-trained pianist, comes to London for an incredibly rare show, as cinematic as it is intimate.

Carlos Cipa is a classically trained pianist, composer and producer who combines classical concepts with pop culture- without reservations or cliches. Besides his solo work, he is a keen collaborator, creating music for film, TV, and theatre; his distinct orchestral compositions remain as intimate as they are cinematic.  Precisely because Carlos Cipa breaks apart conventional musical structures and constantly exploits unfamiliar sound worlds, his sound remains unique and with it he captures crowds of big festivals just the same as the audience of hundreds of clubs and concert halls all over Europe.

Later this year, he is set to release his third album Retronyms which sees Cipa bring together his background as a classically trained pianist and composer with his interest for experimental forms and pop music. On Retronyms, improvisation goes hand in hand with the high art of composition while acoustic(and partly unusual)instruments like the celestameet with electronic production methods or analogue synthesizers. Each note on this album is meticulously thought through and yet Retronyms radiates with visceral liveliness.

This October, Carlos Cipa comes to the stunning St Pancras Old Church, London for an incredibly rare show to perform his upcoming new album along with stunning original material.

A one-off colossal meeting of two Hip Hop game changers

Hip hop duo, Blackalicious burst out of the West Coast flipside in 2000 with debut studio album, Nia, which combined the lyrical dexterity of Gift of the Gab with  producer, Chief Xcel’s incredible grooves. The album went on to make waves across the hip-hop community and beyond, described by Allmusic as “an album that stakes the claim of Chief Xcel and Gift of Gab as not only the best pair of rappers in the underground, but also the best pair of producers.”

Their presence in the music fan’s cultural consciousness hasn’t been long missed, with their impact being felt across the year’s, with moments such as Daniel Radcliffe’s rendition of Alphabet Aerobics on the Late Show running up close to 100 million views online.

Following 2005’s The Craft, they returned with Imani Vol.1 in 2015 and between these, the pair have continued to write, perform and create over the 20 years since the release of their debut album. Now they take the opportunity to look back onto where their career began, bringing a very special show to London’s favourite new hang out, EartH for the 20th anniversary of Nia.

Joining them for one night only are the endlessly funky hip hop flows of The Herbaliser, performing live with a full 8-piece band.

Together, these two hip hop game changers will deliver an unmissable evening for hip hop fans. This is a once in a lifetime chance to witness these masters of the craft under one roof. Don’t sleep.

DJ Krush https://soundcrashmusic.com/dj-krush-food-elct-hphp/ Sat, 20 Jul 2019 18:00:44 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=42136 DJ Krush, aka Hideaki Ishi, pioneer of Japanese Hip Hop and weaver of trippy, smoky, head-nodding beats, will be at Oslo, Hackney for a rare intimate headline show.

Known for atmospheric instrumental productions, DJ Krush’s music is darkly mysterious and seriously addictive, completely befitting his past as part of Japanese crime syndicate yakuza. On the topic of his switch from crime to music, Ishi said “my body wasn’t built for breaking, DJing was the thing for me,” and Japan’s music industry has rejoiced ever since.

Upon entering the industry, Krush, with his experimental beats and instrumental sounds, changed the face of Japanese Hip Hop at a time when it was dominated by the American rap scene. Now, Krush has established himself as one of the most respected artists and producers in the hip hop industry, both in Japan and abroad.

At Oslo, Krush will be joined by DJ Food. Originally produced by Coldcut on the ninja tune independent record label, the DJ Food project started in 1990 on the premise of providing metaphorical “food for DJs”. DJ Food released the Jazz Brakes series, with Jazz Brakes Volume 3 being the most successful. The records consisted of collections of breaks, loops and samples, ideal for mixing, remixing and producing the trademark ninja tune blend of jazz & hip hop. With several Djs having played under the title Dj Food in the past, Strictly Kev is now the baton bearer and will deliver a night of mind-bending tunes.

This is a rare intimate night with Japan’s beats master. Don’t miss out.

This July, he launches is third album ‘Aquamarine’ on Night Time Stories. Described as “a heavyweight astral show of rhythm and vibes”

Uniting two of Ireland’s most forward-thinking musical propositions – Eoin O’Callaghan AKA Elma Orkestra and Ryan Vail – ‘Borders’ is a singular collaborative project. Spanning symphonic ambience to widescreen electronica, it’s a genre-warping meeting of the minds from two of the country’s most innovative artists.

Unable to ignore the political questions arising from across the UK and Ireland, O’Callaghan and Vail collaborate together on this stunning project to explore the concept of borders and the dissonance between the abstraction of politics and the realities of the landscape which form it. Accompanied with drone footage taken of the natural phenomena which lie across the Irish border, and the frontiers seen within nature itself, this A/V show uniquely explores a hard-hitting current issue with an unsettling tranquility and mesmerising curiosity.

Talking about the show to BBC Radio 4, Vail explains his use of the drone footage, “I wanted to get across the beauty, that beauty spills over the lines, if you use a wider lens, you don’t see the border, its invisible”. O’Callaghan adds, “I think for us it was about forgetting the politics about it, and just showing the border for what it actually is; it’s this beautiful piece of land that we live on.”

This stunning eight track project sees O’Callaghan and Vail masterfully blur the contours between contemporary electronic and classical realms. This breaking of new ground – of pushing boundaries and thwarting expectations via attention to detail and a joint penchant for analogue equipment – is what underpins ‘Borders’. They perform it in London for one night only on at The Sebright Arms on 14th June 2019.

Support comes from Sleephawk, a London-based electro-indie one-man-band, enticed by the ideas of technology, loneliness and ambition

The most innovative rap crew the world has seen

In the early 90’s, when gangsta’ rap consumed the airwaves, and the majority of West Coast rappers strapped on their Locs, Chuck Taylor’s & Ben Davis’, The Pharcyde decidedly maintained a willfully weird vision. Opting to stay true to themselves with their left field but still South-Central sensibility, rap had seen few groups so self-deprecating and so smart, four visionary rappers adroitly able to split the difference between helium-voiced and hard-core.

Listening to “Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde” two full decades after its release, its sense of timeliness is unmistakable. Every song on the album inverts a hoary hip-hop cliché. With classics like “Oh Shit,” “Otha Fish”, “Ya’ Mama,” and hit single, “Passing Me By,” it is not surprising that it shipped over a million units, garnered comparisons to De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest, and everyone from Pitchfork Media to The Source has hailed it as one of the greatest albums ever made.

Speaking on the passage of time, their second release “LabCabInCalifornia” has revealed exactly how far-reaching The Pharcyde’s vision was. From enlisting a young and then unknown James Yancey aka J DILLA to produce beats on the classic “Runnin”, to collaborating with director Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich” “Adaptation”) on the video for “Drop,” it has consistently reinforced their steadfast refusal to tread familiar artistic grounds.

Today, The Pharcyde continue to hone their individual abilities while still carrying on the name & legacy in its original fashion. At Earth, expect them to seduce their audience with the same boyish charm that founded them at the beginning. Joined by Jungle Brother’s Africa Baby Bam who’ll be spinning old school hip hop tunes, this is simply an unmissable show for true hip hop fans.

Born in Kiel in 1977 and inspired by the alternative guitar bands of the late 80s and early 90s as well as Acid House and early electronica, Schnauss began developing his own distinct sonic palette. Melding delicate dream-pop sensibilities with ecstatic electronic excess and defying the constraints of music genre boundaries.

After a move to Berlin in the late 90s, Schnauss felt confident enough to begin releasing  ‘little electronica pieces’ under his own name – 2001s ‘Far Away Trains Passing By’. Four further studio albums have followed since then: ‘A Strangely Isolated Place’ (2003), ‘Goodbye’ (2007), ‘A Long Way to Fall’ (2013) and ‘No Further Ahead Than Today’ (2016). He’s a prolific remixer and a member of the last Tangerine Dream Line Up picked by the late Edgar Froese.

After an initial struggle to perform the unique, interchanging nuances of his compositions live, the arrival of Ableton’s Live software has enabled him to build new arrangements on the spot, lending diversity and distinction to each performance. ‘I can react to the atmosphere of the room or re-interpret the pieces in a way that’s reflecting my mood,’ he explains, ‘sometimes playing more ambient; sometimes more rhythm-orientated versions of the songs.’

Joining Ulrich Schnauss on stage is his long-term collaborator, London-based visual artist Nat Urazmetova. In her live visuals the organic and synthesised, amorphous and elusive, fluid and uncanny coalesce, mutate and continuously evolve in the free-flow of improvisation. Through shifting the accustomed modes of perception, the visual performance threads the different narratives of seeing, sensing and relating to the sonic counterpart.

Mesmerising electronic artist, Kelpe, will be starting off the evening. Kelpe’s influences range from the bleeps & bass of classic Warp artists to the funk of Sly Stone, and the minimalism of Steve Reich + Harmonia to the percussive space-scapes of Tortoise + Do Make Say Think. The diversity of the music that inspires Kelpe finds reflection in his own sonic adventures, informing his ever evolving sound, combining as map and compass to guide his lunar-bound b-boy throw downs.

Ali Shaheed Muhammad (founding member of A Tribe Called Quest and super producer in his own right) & Adrian Younge (Black Dynamite, Jay-Z, Ghostface Killah, Wu Tang Clan, Talib Kweli etc)  began their work together in 2013 on the critically acclaimed Souls of Mischief There Is Only Now and Kendrick Lamar’s untitled unmastered albums.  Their partnership cemented on their celebrated music score work for Marvel’s Luke Cage.

Inspired by the sonic aesthetic of Luke Cage their creative dynamic was crystalised in a brand new project ‘The Midnight Hour’, which was released to rapturous acclaim in 2018.

The Midnight Hour is black excellence: an ode to the cultural sophistication of the Harlem Renaissance that occured in New York in the 1920s.  The Midnight Hour album is not just Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge, it’s two of hip-hop’s greatest producers with a tight rhythm section and a full orchestra as well as some of the most celebrated names in contemporary hip-hop, R&B, soul & jazz including CeeLo Green, Raphael Saadiq, Marsha Ambrosius, Bilal, Eryn Allen Kane, Karolina, Questlove and more.

Alt-R&B singer-songwriter LAPP progresses towards his debut EP

His fiery singing and calculated production make “Tennessee” a poignant track with an intense emotional impact

(EARMILK)

‘What a great f*cking artist

(Tom Robinson BBC 6 Music)

After gaining some serious acclaim from Earmilk, Tom Robinson, Louder Than War on his debut single Tennessee, LAPP now deviates in style, moving further towards a classification in the realms of alt-R&B. Still featuring emotive yowls and telling tales of the human condition, LAPP now pulls his style of song-writing toward a strong focus on distinctively digitised terrains of instrumentation, producing something entirely new.

LAPP’s latest sonic venture, ‘Sunny’, thrives on a relaxed groove that stays constant throughout, leaving plenty of space for his gritty vocals to soulfully meander as he cries out questions of life and love. The use of live saxophone brings a rich and organic element to the track, perfectly complimenting the electronically distorted vocal sample that introduces the track and returns periodically to add extra production punch.

Terakaft https://soundcrashmusic.com/terakaft-3-wrl/ Wed, 24 Apr 2019 18:00:40 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=38086 Feel the heat of Terakaft as they bring sun-scorched guitars and desert blues to East London.

Founded by former members of the desert-rock pioneers Tinariwen, Terakaft send listeners deep into the heart of the desert, perfectly reflecting Saharan sands with their rolling and evocative grooves. Formed in 2001, the group have since made the electric guitar completely their own. The stark and harsh conditions of their homeland powerfully permeates through their wild riffs, massed chants and soaring vocals.

Comprised of three members, all of whom sing and play guitar, the group is a perfect fusion of two rhythm guitarists; one bringing sweet and meticulously crafted melodies, while the other holds down an effortlessly rhythmic beat. Underlying all this is the heavy but purposeful tred of the the bass. With the notes of the lead guitar meandering us through a musical wasteland, and the heavy and pulsating heartbeat of the percussion (said to be like that of the “delicate but strong steps of a camel”)…. the group are an intrinsic embodiment of the wild and free terrain of their homeland.

Over the powerful composition of their music they have weaved stories of exile and loneliness in their mother tongue of “Tamashek”. Being born out of the crucible of the northern Mali’s 1980s and 90s rebels, the bands lyrics have been refined by the recent troubles of their homeland.

Guaranteed to heat up the Oslo, Hackney stage, this will be an unmissable opportunity to watch the Saharan bluesmen that are Terakaft live in London!

“With its rock-style production, heavy, looping percussion and melodic guitar lines, Terakaft is poised to find a large audience.” –The Green Man Review

Any crate-digger worth their salt can spend weeks working through Ayers’ extensive catalogue of music. However, it’s the live shows that solidify Ayers as being a truly special talent. Last year at his sold-out show at The Barbican, Ayers worked the room in a way that left the audience completely enthralled. Working through his classics “Everybody Loves the Sunshine”, “Searchin”, “Running Away,” and more, with laid-back banter between his first-class band and the audience, everyone left the show feeling as if they had been schooled in the excellence of jazz, funk, and soul by a master of the craft.

This coming spring, Ayers will return to the capital for an incredibly special 2 night run at Union Chapel, London’s most spellbinding venue. This is an unmissable chance to catch one of the world’s most iconic musicians live.

NIGHT TWO – SOLD OUT

A rare two-night residency from Jazz’s greatest living performer in London’s most spellbinding venue

Roy Ayers is, without a doubt, a living legend.

A true pioneer, Ayers’ influence in the 56 years he’s been active has rippled out into all corners of the music industry. From being a key figure in the acid jazz movement to being crowned the Godfather of Neo-Soul, to then being one of the most sampled artists in history while bridging the gap between jazz and hip-hop, Ayers’ genius is untouchable.

Holly Walker – SOLD OUT https://soundcrashmusic.com/holly-walker-elct-2/ Thu, 11 Apr 2019 18:00:41 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=40051 After selling out her first headline show in record time, Holly Walker returns to London for a night of soulful vocals at Oslo, Hackney. Debuting all new material, this show is set to be in incredibly high demand.

Having written and sung Steal and Midas from Maribou State’s debut album (attracting 6 Music A list plus Lauren Laverne and Maida Vale live sessions); as well as latest single Nervous Tics from their second LP Kingdoms In Colour, on which NME said she ‘shines’, Walker has been writing and touring live with the group for the last few years. Appearances with the band include Glastonbury, Bestival, Secret Garden Party, Sonar, Koko and their forthcoming sold-out show at London’s Roundhouse.

Meanwhile, Walker has been quietly amassing solo material – a groove-led collection of songs detailing ‘casual romance for the bored and selfish’, ‘internet rage’, or ‘that wet-yourself sensation that time’s running out and you haven’t won the game yet’. A ‘wry, light-footed’ lyricist (The Times) with ‘sultry and intoxicating’ vocals (The Guardian), she found her angle when she introduced a live rhythm section to the electronic productions she’d been working on with collaborators including North Downs (Dama Dama) and Royce Wood Junior (37 Adventures). The result is timely and perfectly distilled pop.

A soulful London artist, and a fast rising star, this is unmissable.

Soul-soaked Afrobeat and Hip Hop collective Nubiyan Twist launch their highly anticipated album in one of London’s most beautiful venues

Nubiyan Twist are a collective born from Leeds’ eclectic music scene with a unique sound that draws from jazz, hip hop, African styles, Latin, R’n’B, reggae and electronics.

Orchestrated by guitarist / producer Tom Excell, the band originally met at Leeds College Of Music. The band’s enigmatic vocalist Nubiya Brandon remembers: “We were on different courses but we all went out and partied together. It was only at the end of the course that we decided to get together to jam and it happened from there.

Originally the band was a DJ, vocalist and sax set-up; I was more into writing lyrics and poetry than music at that time. The line-up quickly expanded; we used the name Ten Trick Pony because there were then 10 in the band but our eventual name came
from a moment catching Lauryn Hill on the radio, talking about a hairstyle called the ‘Nubiyan Twist’.”

Now one of the leading lights in the UK’s new generation of soulful, genre-fluid artists, the Leeds-born and now London-based 12-piece collective have created their finest recordings to date, effortlessly weaving together elements of jazz, soul, hip hop, African styles, Latin, dub, hip hop and electronics in a flow of thought-provoking and life-affirming music.

Recorded at the band’s own self-built Henwood Studio in rural Oxfordshire, Jungle Run fluidly moves through different voices from the band’s circle. The inimitable, timeless vocals of Nubiya Brandon lead the way on the album’s title track about breaking preconceptions and promoting equality, “Where you from? I’m from wherever I be.” Saxophonist Nick Richards vocals the killer first single from the album about inner turmoil and a search for the truth, ‘Tell It To Me Slowly’ while rising Ghanaian star K.O.G. appears on the Afro jams ‘Basa Basa’ and ‘They Talk’. Percussionist Pilo Adami (Nina Miranda / Afrosamba) voices the infectious bossa-jazz jam ‘Borders’. The band also draft in two African legends for guest duties with the original Afrobeat maestro Tony Allen on ‘Ghosts’ and Ethio jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke contributing vibes on the sinuous ‘Addis To London’.

At EartH, prepare to be blown away by the live debut of Nubiyan Twist‘s new tunes. With support for the night coming from Hector Plimmer (live), Waaju, and Werkha (DJ), this is going to be a big night stuffed full of Afrobeat, Hip Hop, Soul, and more that will keep you dancing until the early hours.

In an uncertain world, one thing is for sure; Joel Culpepper has an unforgettable voice and a distinctive style that defy comparison.

Blazing into 2019 with a sizzling slice of bittersweet sunshine soul, Joel and long term collaborator and producer Swindle team up with UK rapper Kojey Radical for latest track, ‘Caroline, No’. Following hard on the heels of Colors of Berlin release ‘Woman’, which has racked up over 5 million YouTube views and 2 million+ Spotify streams, and a guest vocal spot on DJ Yoda‘s ‘London Fields’, ‘Caroline, No’ is the sublime first fruits of an eagerly awaited debut album. Bringing together timeless soul music with seductive and sensual vocals, the album, due for release this year, features collaborations with FKJ, Swindle, Redinho and Guy Chambers, among a litany of stellar musical talent.

Previous releases, including the ‘Skydive’ EP and ‘Tortoise’ saw the cream of the music scene including Grammy Award winning producer Jimmy Hogarth, Roy Davis Jr., and Jools Holland’s Musical Director Phil Veacock, queueing up to work with Joel. His ‘Afraid to Be King’ single was a BBC Radio 6 Music Record of the Week earning him a Gilles Peterson session, with further radio support for Joel coming from Lauren Laverne, Annie Mac, Chris Hawkins, Huw Stephens, Trevor Nelson, Mary Anne Hobbs, DJ Target, Toddla T, Charlie Sloth, Jamie East and Steve Lamacq.

But it is the dynamism, energy and impact of his live shows where Joel is at his undeniable best. Recent outings, including a European tour, a sell-out show at the Jazz Café and appearances at Camp Bestival, Reeperbahn, Holy Groove Festival, Standon Calling, Wilderness Festival, LIM Festival, All Points East, and The Great Escape have showcased honest, real and transcendent music with a vocal talent that is as rare as it is exceptional.

“That vocal takes me back to Sam Cooke, with a hint of Prince in there production-wise… a beautiful track” – Lauren Laverne (BBC 6 Music) commenting on ‘Afraid To Be King’.

“What a voice, he’ll be a superstar”- Mary Anne Hobbs, BBC 6 Music

“This guy’s going to be massive” – Jamie East, Virgin Radio

“Plenty of similar talents have gone before and failed, but Culpepper, possessing perhaps the best British male voice since Omar – no lie – deserves to sell albums.” – The Brag Magazine (Australia)

Hejira https://soundcrashmusic.com/hejira-3/ Thu, 07 Mar 2019 19:00:00 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=40262 Hejira are the genre-defying band creating a name for stunningly curated eclecticism.

Hejira developed out of South East London’s vibrant and eclectic music scene, where in 2010 these four multi-instrumentalists set up home studio, “The House of Dreams”. Their debut album Prayer before Birth was received with high critical acclaim, launched by an epic live performance alongside an 18 piece ensemble. Since then, Hejira have cultivated a reputation for creating intelligent, soulful and genre-evaporating music.

Their highly anticipated second album, Thread of Gold, is set to be released in February, and looks to be an profoundly personal exploration of Rahel’s changing relationship with her homeland of Ethiopia after the death of her father. The band joined her in returning to Addis Ababa in 2016 and the record which follows is hewn with eloquent harmonies, subtle instrumentation and flows artfully through acutely personal and moving expression.

Hejira are intricate and effortless performers, seamlessly weaving together the many ribbons of their creativity into a intelligent and soulful sound. The unique synergy between the band lends itself to an incredibly powerful live experience. This is a stunning opportunity to see new music performed live from this groundbreaking band.

One of the most iconic and influential Hip Hop collectives of all time, Slum Village, are returning to London for one massive night of old-school flows and J Dilla-produced classics at Scala. Don’t miss the resurrection of the late, great producer’s sonic legacy on this rare evening with Hip Hop royalty.

Emerging from Detroit’s underground Hip Hop scene in the early 90’s, friends Baatin, T3 and producer J Dilla quickly rose to notoriety for their immaculately produced beats and laid back flows that were unlike anything before them. Their first release thus found its way into the hands of A Tribe Called Quest’s legendary MC Q-Tip, who distributed it amongst Hip Hop’s elite and set in motion a trajectory to fame that saw the Slum Village-sound become incredibly influential during the 90’s and early 2000’s. Particularly, after the release of their now legendary album ‘Fantastic Vol. 2’.

In recent years, the collective has been struck by enormous tragedy with the passing of both J Dilla and Baatin. However, T3 and young producer Young RJ are keeping the work of Dilla alive as they continue to create music and tour the world together. Ever since, the pair boast collaborations with the likes of Kanye West, Phife Dawg, De La Soul and John Legend.

This show will be a rare glimpse into the original work of J Dilla, and into a Hip Hop sound that forged the path for so much of today’s most innovative music. Joined by Lazy Habits, known for their urban British twist New Orleans Jazz, Soul, and Hip Hop, this night is truly unmissable for fans of Hip Hop in its purest form.

At the beginning of this year Cowley announced that his eponymous trio was on hiatus, and he was embracing a new musical direction, in part reflected in the choice of artists on his recent ‘Spacebound Tapes’ EP that included remixes by Rival Consoles, Throwing Snow, Christian Löffler and Vessels. 2018 also saw the ever forward-moving composer co-write a track with Maribou State for their album ‘Kingdoms In Colour’, support Roy Ayers at the Barbican and record a mix for the esteemed Solid Steel series.

A rare performance from three of the UK’s finest guitarists

Les Triaboliques unites three of the UK’s most inventive guitarists – Justin Adams, Lu Edmonds & Ben Mandelson – into one guitar super group.

Combining their impressive musical backgrounds, having played with Robert Plant, Public Image Limited and Billy Bragg, Les Triaboliques showcase their astonishing instrumental work on guitar, mandolin, Turkish saz and cümbüş. Les Triaboliques blend Justin’s desert-blues-soaked guitars with Lu’s saz and cümbüs and Ben’s mandolin/barizouki into their own unique dusk-core genre.

Why ‘Les Triaboliques’? Formed as a result of an inspired probe by record-company geneticist René Goiffon, Les Triaboliques somehow manage the impossible: to blend Justin’s desert-blues-soaked guitars with Lu’s Turkadelic saz and cümbüş and Ben’s mandolin/barizouki world-string-theories, amplifiers and vocal mikes at the ready. The Desert, The Delta, The Steppes, The Underground. Crossing the stone bridge between dark city and dusk. On the creaking causeway, instruments on backs, rain on our packs. We smell the black earth. We are intent.

Freak – Norman Jay (MBE) + Nicky Siano + Marshall Jefferson & More https://soundcrashmusic.com/freak-slf/ Fri, 30 Nov 2018 22:00:55 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=38140

TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE DOOR

Dancefloor heroes Norman Jay (MBE), Nicky Siano, and Marshall Jefferson are all coming together for Freak, the biggest disco party of the year

A trifecta of musical prowess, we’ve managed to get these three icons under one roof for a night of boogie, disco and rare grooves. Each pioneers in their own right; this is a one-off occasion to witness a selection of the industries most respected DJ’s… all of whom’s history in the game is dripping in incomparable mirror-balled glamour.

Starting with Nicky Siano, legendary DJ from the golden age of 70’s New York disco. Not only was his club “The Gallery” an integral point in the creation of the disco scene in New York but Siano’s technique was also something that changed the way decks have been used ever since … beatmatching, EQing, and the use of three turntables to create “proto-disco” are all things that we can attribute to this game changer. Original Studio 54 resident, his selections span from soul to funk and gospel… you’ll want to bathe in the presence of this original disco luminary.

Known to many as the “Godfather” of house music, Marshall Jefferson is another music dignitary who has carved a huge name for himself within the industry. Having worked as a producer for Universal Recording Studios in Chicago, Marshall also had a big hand to play in the Chicago house scenes most notorious and influential tracks…

Lastly, presenting Norman Jay…It’s no surprise that Jay has been awarded an MBE for his contributions to music. Having started his career playing in 70’s New York block parties with his uncle, Jay brought back elements of their club-culture to the London scene. Notably Jay was one of the creators of our beloved “KISS” radio, and the “Good Life” soundsystem that was the first to play funk, soul and disco at Notting Hill Carnival. Being the figure who fostered the rare-groove scene here in the UK, it’s what he’s done for the dance scene that deservedly makes him one of the most popular and loved DJ’s that this country has produced.

To keep the party going until the early hours, we also have a host of other DJs, including Waxist and Danuka, who will keep the floor moving and grooving. Very special guests still to be announced…

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to bare witness to three heads who changed dance music forever.

The Mouse Outfit https://soundcrashmusic.com/the-mouse-outfit-3-hph/ Wed, 28 Nov 2018 23:59:48 +0000 https://soundcrashmusic.com/?p=36364 Jaw-dropping lyrical skill meets jazzy lo-fi grooves as The Mouse Outfit light up The Garage.

Founded in South Manchester by Chini and Defty, The Mouse Outfit earned their stripes on the local hip hop scene before releasing their now legendary debut LP Escape Music. Having released their third album Jagged Tooth Crook earlier this year, the collective have since grown into the UK’s premiere live hip hop band, and earned the continued support of the BBC’s Mary Anne Hobbs in the process. Their upwards trajectory brings them to The Garage, London for a night with some of the best lyricists the UK has to offer.

With collaboration at the heart of The Mouse Outfit’s ethos, their live show features a full live band, fronted by Dubbul O, Ellis Meade, Berry Blacc & [KSR] – a mixture of rapid fire lyrical dexterity and soulful melodies.

This is an unmissable opportunity to catch The Mouse Outfit in the midst of their meteoric rise to hip hop royalty. Don’t simply believe the hype, come and see for yourself why they have been dubbed the future of the UK scene.
